He argues that many Chinese Australian writers come from Mainland China and are quite young, thus he tries to look at Australia through the eyes of a Chinese Australian, not a new immigrant, and hopes to understand Australian society and the lives of Chinese. His stories comprise love stories, experiences in Australia, and in the 'Postface', he elucidates his opinion of Chinese Australian writers.

Synopsis of Content: Cai firstly states that Melbourne is a very cultural city with a lot of parks where one can have one's lunch. Melbourne has four seasons in one day. He enjoys the greenery of Melbourne. He believes that there are more women than men, and that women wear few clothes. Australians love gambling, divorce is easily accomplished, and Vegemite is the national treasure. He doesn't know whether life in Australia is too relaxed or whether Australians are lazy. He finds it strange that some markets are only open three days a week, which would be impossible in South-East Asia. Rather than selling things the next day, they are thrown away. Flowers, basic necessities and vegetables are very cheap, yet cigarettes are expensive. Trams are highly valued. The writer describes Australians as very friendly and warm. Heroin is not believed to be a problem in Melbourne, but marijuana is. He believes that minor crime is widespread. French products are not sold because of the nuclear tests in Muroroa. Cai gives an amusing description (pp92-3) of how Australians work. He states that Chinese migrants believe that Australians discriminate against Chinese.

Australians are said to love outdoor activities and sport, which is attributed to the farming and husbandry of Australia's forefathers. As for the migration of Chinese to Australia, it is said to be more difficult to get into Australia: but once they are in, they are not discriminated against. The "White Australia Policy" is merely the product of economic pressure and has nothing to do with racism. On the contrary, Australians are very friendly, and it is easy to make friends.

Synopsis of Content: Xi recounts ten interviews with migrants. Some subjects migrated with their families, others on their own. A considerably high number of the subjects returned to Hong Kong after having lived in Australia for some years. The reasons for their return are multifarious, but the most commonly recurring theme is that of unemployment. Most subjects stress the freedom experienced in Australia, and a difficulty getting used to a calm and peaceful environment. The first subject emphasizes that there is not enough pressure in Australian society. All subjects seem to agree that Australians are a very 'homely' people, investing large sums in their homes. The freedom in schools and Universities is also stressed. One subject states that success, in Australian society, is not merely based on education.Culturally, some refer to the 'pub-culture' of Australians. One subject mentions that in order to integrate with Australian society, immigrants should take up Australian habits, such as beer-drinking and watching football. Most consider language the greatest barrier to integration.

Synopsis of Content: This monograph is organized in four parts: "White Australia Policy" (WAP), Australia's foreign affairs, Australia's socialist welfare system and Australia's way of life, and it concludes with a report of visit. The author stresses that this book envisages two aims: firstly, that the reader will develop an interest in Australia, and secondly, that he will contribute to the understanding of Chinese by Australians.Part One discusses the historical developments, and future directions, of the WAP and racism.Part two focuses on foreign affairs, including Menzies' opposition to Communism. In part three the author compares Australia's social welfare system to that of the Socialist system. He comments that there is very little unemployment in Australia, and food, clothing, as well as housing are readily available. The development of Socialism is closely connected to trade unions and worker's movements in general.Part four includes a discussion of the federation of states, the Parliamentary debate of the Communist Party, President Nixon's visit to Australia, international relations with China and Russia, and espionage. This is a very interesting monograph, and deserves further scrutiny.

NLA Call Number: OCN 3950 1314

Synopsis of Content: In this monograph Australia is portrayed as the 'Land of Wallabies', being more a travel destination for Hong Kong Chinese than a destination for migration.Australians are depicted as easy-going. The writer suggests that many Australians are lazy, because they only work five days per week. He discusses Australia's convict past, strong British influences and the abundance of sheep and wallabies. He then outlines Australian Indigenous history and current relationships with 'white' Australians. Then, the history of Overseas Chinese in Australia is outlined with emphasis on a fear of 'Asianisation' among some Australians. Overseas students are regarded as a major income-source, and the writer argues that Australians do not like to study. This is not due to their laziness, but due to the bad job-market and fears of the future. The writer touches on subjects like AIDS and condoms., Bondi, Kings Cross and its Sex shops, as well as drug and alcohol abuse. This is a very exhaustive informative book.

Place of Publication: 九龍 (Jiulong) Kowloon, Hong Kong

NLA Call Number: OCN 3950 221

Synopsis of Content: This text discusses the possiblility of a Chinese, rather than European, 'discovery' of Australia.Wei states that both China and Australia have similar climatic conditions. He assumes that the discovery of a statue of the Chinese god of longevity testifies to early Chinese arrival in Australia. However, the author hastens to add that the excavation was not an archaeological one and that solitary (dubious) evidence is unreliable. It could be possible that the Chinese discovered Australia, but there is no reliable evidence to support this view. Because there is no direct evidence, the author investigates citations from 167 Classics that refer to Australia, or describe countries that seem to resemble Australia. He begins with the Chunqiu. The 'Postface' to the book states exactly the opposite to the Chinese 'Preface'.This is a very interesting unique book that probably says more about Chinese Ethnocentrism and the Chinese reaction to the "White Australia Policy," than about Australia in Asia.

Synopsis of Content: This is the account of an official visit to Australia. It includes one map. The contents comprise: people, economy, geography, history, the national system, military, politics, workers associations, health care, education, literature and media. The writer argues that the living standard in Australia was very low before white settlement. Aborigines were hunters and gatherers. They lived in tribal communities with their own laws, special ceremonies and art. Dreamtime was central to their belief-system.The first whites were convicts, coming mostly from England and Ireland. Today, the migrants who do not come from Europe still experience discrimination. The conception that one should oppose racism slowly emerges. The writer refers to the extensive killing of Indigenous Australians by white Australians. Aborigines are kept in reservations, have no rights and cannot find jobs in the cities, for they are considered a subclass in the cities. After World War Two, the "White Australia Policy" was introduced.Until World War One, Australia was the number one exporter of wool, after World War Two Australia focused on the development of Industries, which resulted in an increasing export potential.

Synopsis of Content: Like many writers, this author points out that Australia is a very young country with a very strong democratic spirit. After giving a brief history of Australia, she states that it is a very British nation. She finds that the people are very rustic (village-like), since animal husbandry and farming are important aspects of the Australian society. Australians love water sports, golfing, horse races and travel. When it comes to food, Australians are very casual (they have very few dishes), but alcohol is a must. She portrays Australians as very helpful and friendly, and open-minded towards newcomers. The respect of other's freedom is highly valued, and Australians expect others not to interfere in their affairs. The hierarchy in families is based on friendship. Social welfare is highly developed, with the state takes care of everything from birth until old age. This monograph is very perceptive and interesting and hence certainly deserves further study.

Giving people a 'fair go' is believed to be an important unique aspect of Australian society. The essays of this volume have sometimes rather strange sounding titles: "Mutual trust and optimistically promoting national change," "Exposing history's contradiction: Australia's new emergence," "Paul Keating: looking at leaders that change the era," "Gareth Evans: the one who reclaims wasteland in the area of foreign affairs," "Soft superiority alone advances in the world," "Lowering the head and listening to the hall of the will of the people," "Uniting past and future," "Amidst the flagstone's echo," "History opposes provinces," and many others. This seems to be an extremely interesting monograph, yet the single essays have to be considered in detail, since the titles do not really elucidate the topics discussed.
