Curious Collections: National Library Building Art
Curios, conundrums, mysteries and marvels: the National Library has over 10 million items in its collection, with treasures in abundance.
Join us online via Zoom for this Friends exclusive event to learn more about the artwork contained within the National Library building.
Principle Designer Walter Bunning’s original theme for the building’s artworks was water, earth, air. His aim was for all of the artworks to harmonise with each other and the building. All the artists were kept aware of the others’ designs and in 1966 Matégot, Bass and French were able to meet.
The original intention was that the fountain in the forecourt would represent water, the outside panels on the lakeside of the building would represent earth and the internal tapestries and windows represented air. While only French’s windows actualised this original concept, many other artworks all contribute to the ambience that is the National Library.
You’ll have the opportunity to talk and ask questions throughout the session in a friendly and informal online setting. Settle in for a Friends-only chat, to learn and converse in the comfort of home with a good group of Friends.
