About Z39.50

Z39.50 is an international information retrieval standard (ISO 23950) which enables one computer to speak to another to find and obtain information. It means you can search and retrieve information from any Z39.50-compliant database using your own Z39.50-compliant system.

Databases available via the Z39.50 Gateway

You can access the Australian National Bibliographic Database (ANBD) and Libraries Australia Authorities via the Libraries Australia Z39.50 Gateway (Z-Gateway). You can download and save records, then directly import them into your Z39.50-compliant system.

In addition to the ANBD and Libraries Australia Authorities, the following Z39.50 databases can be accessed via the Z-Gateway:

  • British Library Catalogue
  • Library of Congress Catalogue
  • OCLC WorldCat (including Te Puna)
  • OCLC WorldCat Authorities
  • The UK & Irish Academic & National Library Catalogue (COPAC).

If you would like to access any of these additional databases, contact Libraries Australia member support for connection details.
