A quarter century’s dedication to the NBD comes to an end tomorrow, Friday 31 May, with the retirement of Rob Walls, Director Database Services. Many of you will have met Rob at user group meetings, Forums, ACOC meetings and other conferences over the years. Rob joined the National Library in 1987 and has worked on the NBD – with its various brand names and service configurations – ever since. His knowledge of our collective bibliographic and authority metadata and the many systems we use to put that metadata to work for you and the Australian public is unparalleled. But Rob’s contribution goes so much further than that. His deep understanding of the Australian library landscape, his ability to see and plan for the future of our services, and his wise counsel to many Australian librarians will be greatly missed. Rob will now have much more time to indulge his love of travel and the arts, and we hope to get regular updates wherever he is in the world and whatever exhibitions or theatre he is enjoying.
Rob was delighted that we were able to announce his successor last Friday. Monika Szunejko will commence as Director Database Services on Monday. Monika joined the National Library in February this year as Manager, NBD, and will bring her many years of experience in Western Australian library systems to her new role.
We hope you enjoy these two images marking Rob’s departure: one of Monika, Rob, and Julia Trainor (Rob’s predecessor as Director); and one showing how absolutely indispensable Rob has been to the Australian library community.
