Currency of data is a significant and ongoing challenge for partner libraries and the ANBD. Out of date holdings result in inefficiencies across Australia with ILL/DD requests that can’t be filled, inaccurate collection development decisions, and frustrated patrons who can’t find items.
Updating ANBD holdings can be resource intensive for partner libraries. Data refreshes can be long and difficult, requiring significant investment of staff time and expertise. They’re also resource intensive for Trove Collaborative Services staff, who have previously had to limit the number of data refreshes were performed in a year.
In the past some partner libraries lacked the technical capability to contribute to the ANBD at all.
OAI-PMH Daily Update improves partner workflows. Once we have worked with a system vendor to enable and test compatibility, it takes less than 2 weeks for Trove Collaborative Services to activate OAI-PMH Daily Update for a partner library With little to no ongoing staff time required once the updates are working, it’s a big gain in efficiency. It allows more libraries to participate in sharing their holdings.
With the implementation of OAI-PMH Daily Updates, libraries will no longer need specific staff expertise, system capability and resourcing to contribute their whole collection and maintain accurate holdings.
In a multi-vendor environment like Australia, implementing a mature standard like OAI-PMH ensures all libraries have a chance to share in these efficiency gains.
