Early editions of the nation’s favourite magazine, The Australian Women’s Weekly, are now available online - as the National Library of Australia’s Christmas gift to the nation.
Issues of the iconic magazine, from the first publication on 10 June 1933 to when it changed to a monthly on 15 December 1982, are now online at trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper for everyone to read now and into the future. The project was undertaken with the assistance of the State Library of NSW and in conjunction with the magazine’s publisher, ACP Magazines.
Acting Director-General of the National Library Warwick Cathro said for more than 75 years, The Australian Women’s Weekly has told Australia’s stories, from royals to our first female prime minister, from war to fashion, through words and photographs.
‘The National Library is proud to lead the way by combining cutting-edge digitisation technology with such an icon of Australian publishing history in order to make this gift to the nation possible,’ Dr Cathro said.
He said a ‘search and rescue’ campaign, conducted by the National Library, in which the public was invited to donate ‘missing’ copies of the magazine to the Library’s collection, had proved a great success–and had made completing the digitisation project possible.
Former Editor-In-Chief and now General Manager, Media, Public Affairs and Brand Development at ACP Magazines, Deborah Thomas, said not only would long-time fans of the magazine now be able to access early editions online, she hoped the project would also attract a new generation of readers keen to see how the magazine chronicled key events in our history.
‘In my role, as Council member of the Library, I believe this gift benefits everyone interested in how mainstream media has covered the changing role of women in Australian society as well as the coverage of significant events in Australia and around the world,’ Ms Thomas said.
The digitisation of The Australian Women’s Weekly coincides with the first birthday of the Library’s free discovery service Trove trove.nla.gov.au/ where digitised copies can be accessed.
