Picture Australia, an online pictorial resource, hosted by the National Library of Australia, is calling on digital photography enthusiasts from Sydney and New South Wales to contribute images of town and country as part of the newly created Ourtown project.
The aim of the project is to increase the number of contemporary images available through Picture Australia.
The images required include those showing where and how people spend their time in rural and urban locations, as well as in domestic and work spaces.
Fiona Hooton, Picture Australia Manager said that Picture Australia offers access to more than one million digitised documentary images including historic and contemporary photographs, paintings, prints, drawings, artefacts, costumes and sculptures.
"The addition of images into Ourtown will boost the more than 15 000 contemporary images lodged since early 2006 and made available in Picture Australia."
The Ourtown project complements the People, Places and Events project launched by Picture Australia early in 2006 which together these projects will add significant value to the nation's visual record and be of great interest to future researchers.
"Within these images we are seeing some exciting creative contemporary works where historical photographs and locations are linked to the present. An example is images of the iconic Sydney Harbour Bridge taken by a traditional camera in 1932 together with a digital image captured in 2005, or images of Brisbane's Queen and Albert Streets taken in 1959 and 2006," Ms Hooton said.
Typical users of Picture Australia include school and university students, researchers, local historians, curators, social historians, family historians, people seeking Australian art images, and people overseas seeking information on Australia. Picture Australia images come from more than 40 Australian and international collecting institutions, such as libraries, archives, museums and galleries.
