Thank you for your efforts during the codeathon to identify Australian Indigenous languages in library records.

8017 library records now have an Australian Indigenous language code representing 465 unique languages. A fantastic effort!

The visualisation now shows the linguistic and geographical spread of our collaborative work.

In the 2019 International Year of Indigenous Languages the National Library, the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies (AIATSIS), Trove, Libraries Australia and the State and Territory libraries are collaborating for a national code-a-thon to identify items in Indigenous Australian languages.

We need your help to identify and tag these items in Trove using the Austlang database of Indigenous Australian languages. The tags will then be imported into local library catalogues making these materials easier to find.

Join us during NAIDOC Week (7-14 July) to make this material more accessible to communities, researchers and all Australians.

How to get involved

It's easy to get involved. All you need to do is register for a Trove account and watch our how to video which contains information on how to search Austlang and how to tag items in Trove.

To get started we have a number of sample searches by state containing items likely to be in language.

Remember if you're not sure what Indigenous Australian language the item is in please don't tag it. You can contact AIATSIS for advice.

Codeathon Results

This visualisation from Trove shows the results of the codeathon. Navigate through the three pages to see the geographical and linguistic spread of our work. Hover over the language names or dots on the map to see the number of records coded.
