Before Captain Cook first arrived in 1770, many theories and myths about the great southern land had been circulating Europe.

The first official sighting of Australia was by the Dutch in 1606. There is also speculation that the continent was sighted and mapped by other countries prior to this.

The Library has a large collection of publications and maps relating to this exciting time in exploration, which we celebrated during the 2013-14 exhibition: Mapping Our World.
