The National Library has a large collection of Australian and overseas newspapers in print, microform and electronic formats. See our related Newspapers guide.

This guide contains a select listing of print and microform indexes that can assist you with access to these newspapers.

Many links in this guide take you to catalogue records for items in our collection. If you are unable to get access to them you can ask us to undertake a search on your behalf. Please indicate who or what you are searching for and the index you would like us to search.  Many indexes have been replaced by the TROVE newspaper database, so don't forget to check there first.

Major full-text databases can be accessed through eResources. Some can be accessed offsite by National Library cardholders, others are freely available websites, whilst other require you to be within the Library to use them. You may find that some of those in the last category are also available at your local library.

Major full-text databases include Factiva and Sydney Morning Herald Archives 1955-1995.

Other indexes that may be available are listed in the National Library of Australia's Catalogue.

Online versions of overseas and Australian newspapers through major full-text databases are available to registered users of the Library via our e-Resources.

Current newspapers post 1990 are likely to be online. You can explore many online newspapers in eResources.

Licenced  Library PressDisplay provides access to overseas newspapers in 40 languages from more than 80 countries.
