Meeting zinesters and collecting zines
14 June 2014

On Sunday 23rd March 2014, local zine enthusiasts and zinesters from all over Australia got together at Gorman House for the second annual Canberra Zine Emporium (CZE) zine fair.

CZE did a fabulous job throughout the You Are Here festival, celebrating all things of a papery DIY nature. As the Library collects all sorts of materials (including less-mainstream items), we were excited to see what was on offer this year at the CZE fair to add to our existing zine collection.

Fair highlights included:

The famous Zine Vending Machine, which has had to be re-filled with ziney goodness several times since its launch.

To entertain the crowd, there were live performances from a variety of groups, including circus performers and theatre groups.

Typewriters are a staple zinester tool, so it was great to catch up with Robert Messenger from the Australian Typewriter Museum, who had many interesting models on display.

The closet-lives of librarians came out into the warm Autumn sunshine when we found an Library staff member (and part-time zinester) on the other side of the table!

We collected lots of interesting zines for our collection, which will no doubt provide a fun challenge for our cataloguers!

As zinesters love to swap, this year I made my very first zine (about doing martial arts!) to give away on the day.
