The papers were donated in several instalments between 1964 and 1988 to
the National Library by Mrs. Florence Maple-Brown (nee Faithfull) from
Springfield near Goulburn, N.S.W.
The papers include station records of Springfield and other
family holdings, papers relating to the Faithfull family, including
William Pitt, George Ernest, Augustus Lucian and Reginald Faithfull,
papers of E.R. Deane and a gold medal known as the 'bushranger medal'.
Photographs have been transferred to the Pictorial
Section and printed maps and survey plans have been transferred to
the Map Section.
William Pitt Faithfull (1806-1896), pastoralist, was the eldest son of
William Faithfull (1774-1847). He acquired a grant of land near Goulburn
in 1828 and founded the Springfield stud, breeding merino
sheep. Springfield is claimed to be the oldest registered merino
flock in Australia in the possession of the one family.
In 1844 William Pitt Faithfull married Mary, daughter of Thomas Deane
and they had nine children, including George Ernest (1846-1910) and
Reginald (1850-1992). Springfield was left to their youngest son,
Augustus Lucian (1855-1942), and later passed on to Lucian's daughter,
Florence who married Irwin Maple-Brown (1899-). Jim Maple-Brown is the
current owner.
E.R. Deane was the nephew of Mary Deane who married William Pitt
Faithfull.
For a copy of the family tree see Appendix 1 (not included here)

NOTE: This list was made in October/November 1993 by Barbara Ross and
supersedes all other lists. It lists the material exactly as it was found
by her in the boxes at that date and reproduces the number identifications
- folder 1,2, Plastic Bag A, B etc. - as put there previously. Because of
numerous attempts at sorting, the lists previously made bore little or no
relation to the actual contents of the boxes as they stood in October
1993.

f.2. One large volume with a printed label "Court of Requests".
This label bears no relation to its contents. The book
has two parts (a) Details of Money paid to the Commercial
Bank by the Survey Office to Deane and details of its
disbursement via work done by Deane, which is listed
according to its place and cost. This is in essence an
over view of his surveying work in the Springfield District
from 1867-1879 (b) Halfway through the volume there is a
numerical listing of survey plans done by Deane. These
numbers tie in with plans in f.1. Presumably the county
Argyle accounts for the prefix A. The others are for the
County of Georgiana. This is therefore a listing of
survey plans in f.1, and also plans in what were formerly
boxes 14B, 15, 16a, b, c and which were transferred to Maps
Section, 10 Nov. 1993. They were all done by E.R. Deane,
Licensed Surveyor. A photocopy has been made and has been
given to the Map Section. One photocopy is also available
in Manuscript Section
