The collection was donated by Eleanor Dark to the Library in 1975.
Further papers were received from John Dark between 1989 and 2000. The papers
comprise correspondence (1910-74), newspaper clippings (mostly reviews of
Eleanor Dark's novels), and other papers.
Correspondents include Marjorie Barnard, Miles
Franklin, Eric G. Lowe, Vance and Nettie Palmer,
Karl Shapiro, Xavier Herbert, Jean Devanny, Alec
Chisholm and Henrietta Drake-Brockman.

The novelist, Eleanor Dark (nee O'Reilly) was born in 1901 and died in
1985. Some of Dark's works include Prelude to Christopher (1934),
Return to Coolami (1936) and The timeless land (1941).
Prelude to Christopher and Return to Coolami won the
Australian Literature Society's Gold Medal for the best Australian novel for
the years 1934 and 1936 respectively.
