MS 5816 Papers of Tom Uren (1921- )
This collection covers the period 1970-78 and was transferred to the Library in
a number of consignments between 1977 and 1979. Some of the consignments came
directly from Tom Uren while the remainder came via Uren's Press Secretary,
Clem Lloyd, who used the papers to write an adminsitrative history of the
Department of Urban and Regional Development. There are also Clem Lloyd papers
held at MS 8013.
See also paper of Tom Uren at MS 6055.
Tom Uren was born in Balmain, Sydney in 1921 and was educated at Manly High
School. His career as a professional boxer was interupted by wartime service.

worked on the Burma-Siam Railway.
From 1958 to 1990 he was the ALP member for the House of Representatives seat
of Reid, located in western Sydney. From 1973-75 he was the Minister for Urban
and Regional Development, and from 1976 to 1977 he was Deputy Leader of the
Opposition. In 1983 he became Minister for Territories and Local Governement,
and from 1984 to 1987 he was Minister for Local Government and Administrative
Services.
Throughout his Parliamentary career Tom Uren was an active member of the left
wing of the ALP, maintaining opposition to the Vietnam War, conscription and
nuclear testing. His chief political interests are urban affairs, the
environment, veterans' affairs and security and intelligence.
