Access
Partly restricted. Minutes and directors correspondence are only
to be issued with the written approval of the Australian Elizabethan Theatre
Trust.
Provenance
The Australian Elizabethan Theatre Trust presented the first instalment
of its records to the Library in 1978. Other instalments followed in 1980,
1984, 1989 and 1998.
Scope and Content
The records extend back to the formation of the Trust in 1954, but most
of its early records have not survived. (Some early material may be found in
the papers of Sir John Latham (MS 1009), who was the first President of the
Trust.) The bulk of the records date from the period 1965-85. They include
correspondence, minutes, financial records, subject files, press cuttings,
scripts, scores, programs, publicity material, photographs and tape
recordings.
Organisation
The records are arranged in box list order by consignment dates. Within
each consignment the records have generally been arranged by the form of the
material, such as correspondence, scripts or programs. All files have been kept
intact and wherever possible the order of the files has been retained.
The financial records (boxes 135-382) have yet to be listed.
Historical Note
The Australian Elizabethan Theatre Trust was founded in September 1954
as a non-profit public company with the aim of establishing national drama,
opera and ballet companies employing local artists. It was named to commemorate
the recent visit to Australia of Queen Elizabeth II. Its founders, H.C. Coombs,
Sir Charles Moses and John Douglas Pringle, had raised £100,000 through a
public appeal.
In 1955 the Trust leased the old Majestic Theatre in Newtown, Sydney,
and reopened it as the Elizabethan Theatre. Under the leadership of Hugh Hunt,
the first Executive Director, the Trust made a major contribution to national
theatre. It launched the Trust Players and the Young Elizabethan Players,
founded the National Institute of Dramatic Art in Sydney, took over Summer
of the Seventeenth Doll, and presented plays by Australian writers such as
Richard Beynon, Peter Kenna, Alan Seymour and Patrick White. With financial
assistance from State and municipal governments, it provided grants to amateur
groups in most States.
The Trust also established in 1956 the Elizabethan Theatre Trust Opera
Company, followed by the Australian Ballet School and in 1967 the Elizabethan
Trust Orchestra, divided into Sydney and Melbourne ensembles. Its musical and
ballet activities were gradually divested when the Australian Opera and
Australian Ballet Foundations were set up in 1970. Its role as a funding body
also came to an end with the establishment of the Australian Council for the
Arts (later the Australia Council) in 1968.
By the 1980s the Trust had greatly reduced funding. It continued
entrepreneurial activities, such as importing drama and puppet companies. It
began supporting artists, administering awards and establishing promotional
facilties, and administered a tax-deuctible donation scheme for the performing
arts. In the 1990s its operations were scaled down further and it became
essentially a Sydney arts organisation, operating a ticketing agency and
organising theatre parties.
