MS 7168 Papers of Jack Lindsay (1900-1990)
Biographical Note
Author. Lindsay was the eldest son of Norman Lindsay and author of over 150
books, including translations, novels, biography, politics and philosophy. He lived
in England from 1926 until his death.
INTRODUCTION
This is a revision of the preliminary list produced in May 1986 for the
consignments received from Jack Lindsay on the following dates:
10 April 1985 (8 large cartons)
6 June 1985 (7 very large cartons)
28 June 1985 (14 cm.)
11 April 1986 (6 cm.)
1 July 1986 (1 cm.)
20 February 1991 (1 cm.)
A further consignment of seven cartons was received on 2 May 1991 but has not
yet been sorted or listed.
This list is likely to be revised as it is still necessary to sort within
Series 3-54.
ORIGINAL ARRANGEMENT
Jack Lindsay had his own system of organisation and a corresponding list, which
is difficult to match with the papers actually received by the Library.
He had a series of subject groupings whose titles are largely mnemonic, and
often relate to titles of books subdivided numerically (eg. Self 5, MS 132,
S.W. 19, Odds 6, Activities). Within each bundle/item (the smallest unit) one
will find a mixture of printed, manuscript and photocopied material, as well as
some letters.
The Letters group and the MS group are the largest, and have been placed first,
followed by the remaining groups in a rough alphabetic sequence. Last come the
"miscellaneous" type groups: Miscellaneous (proper), Queries, and Books
(including proof copies).
The headings marked with an asterisk (*) are ones devised by NLA rather than by
Lindsay.
CURRENT STATUS OF COLLECTION
This list reflects the box numbers and contents at December 1991, but box
contents are fluctuating continually.
Series 1 (Letters) has been put into folders and the letters are being arranged
chronologically and indexed. This will take some time, so readers are urged
not to disturb the order they find in folders. They are welcome to view the
card index to correspondence.
Series 2 (MS) has been put into numerical sequence according to the numbers
allocated by Jack Lindsay (eg MS 154). As the bundles are progressively put
into folders there may be slight variations in box contents. Check boxes
either side if the item you require in not in the stated box.
The remaining series have not received detailed treatment yet but but there
will be internal sorting and foldering, so the box numbers will alter over
time.
Please note that the (unnumbered) sequence of boxes devised in 1986 was
inadvertently disrupted during a large-scale shelving exercise. Box numbers
were then assigned before this disruption was detected. In recent years the
collection has had use by researchers who may have referred to these box
numbers in their citations. The collection was restored to its previous order
in December 1991. For the benefit of these researchers and others who may
refer to the earlier box numbers, these have been added to the list.
