Ian Temby was admitted to law practice in 1966 and joined a Perth law
firm Northmore Hale Davey and Leake in the same year. In 1980 he took silk
and set up his own law practice. In 1984 Temby was appointed the first
Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions in Canberra. In 1988 he was
appointed the first Commissioner of New South Wales Independent Commission
Against Corruption (ICAC) and held the position until 1994.
The papers were donated by Temby to the Library under the Tax Incentives
for the Arts Scheme in 1996. The collection documents Tembys legal
career between 1972 and 1988 and reflects his diverse interests and
activities. The papers include documentation relating to Tembys
involvement in local government (as Councillor of the City of Subiaco
1982-83, and as ALP candidate for the Western Australia Legislative
Assembly for the seat of Nedlands in 1981), the Legal Advice Bureau
(founded by Temby, Senator Fred Chaney and Peter Dowding), Law Council of
Australia (President 1983-84), Law Society of Western Australia (President
1982-83) and occasional tutor and lecturer in Law at the University of
Western Australia.
The papers were received in good order and, wherever possible, the
original arrangement has been maintained by the Library.
