How to access Norfolk Island cemetery and burial records online and in the Library.

Background

Norfolk Island has one cemetery, located at Kingston, on the shores of the aptly named Cemetery Bay. Burials have taken place here from the period of the first settlement to the present day.

Currently, funeral services are carried out by the Norfolk Island Hospital as there are no commercial funeral parlours. There are also no crematorium facilities. If a person dies on Norfolk Island it is not necessarily the case that they will be interred on the Island as their remains may be transported to another locality for cremation or burial.

Under the Public Reserves (Amendment) Act 2009, a sexton may be appointed by the Island's Administrator to be "...responsible for the day to day management and control of the cemetery and has such duties as may be determined by law or the terms of appointment."
