Special collections material may have restrictions around use – copying, accessing or publishing these items may be subject to certain conditions. This is because this material is often rare, unique and fragile.  

It may not be possible to copy, access or publish certain material, or you may be required to obtain written permission to do so.  

Copying 

Where permitted, you are welcome to use digital devices to capture personal copies of special collections material for research purposes. The following conditions apply when viewing material and planning to take copies for personal use: 

  • Confirm that you have permission to copy the material. Copying restrictions may apply and you may need to request permission from the rights holder. Library staff can inform you of any copying restrictions and advise you on the process of seeking permission.
  • Get permission from Library staff before you use a tripod or stand to photograph special collections material. 

Access 

Rights holders may restrict or require written permission to access collection material. Library staff can inform you of any access restrictions and advise you on the process of seeking permission. 

Publishing 

Confirm that you have permission to publish. The material may be in copyright or publication restrictions may apply. Refer to our intention to publish process for further information. 

Please familiarise yourself with your responsibilities under the Australian Copyright Act, 1968 (Cth), including Moral Rights, and recognise your liability for any infringement of the Act.  

Material with Indigenous cultural content 

You may be required to seek cultural clearances from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, families, individuals or organisations before you access or reproduce some Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander material. Should cultural clearances be required, the Library will assist you to understand the process involved in meeting your obligations to consult with Aboriginal people and Torres Strait Islanders
