WHAT DOES THE LIBRARY HOLD?

The Library holds print copies of American National Standards Institute (ANSI) Standards dating from 1969 to 1997.

We no longer hold American Society for Testing of Materials (ASTM) Standards.

STANDARDS AND COPYING

Copying of standards by our Copies Direct service is provided in accordance with the Copyright Act 1968.

Visit the National Library in person to request and view copies in the Main Reading Room. 

ANSI standards are available for interlibrary loan. Enquire at your local library.

How do you request a printed American standard in the Catalogue?

If you know the number of the standard:

1. Go to the Catalogue record for American National Standards

Note The standards are not listed individually, but grouped within a number range.  Not all issues within these number ranges are held.
2. Type in the number of the standard in the space provided for the volume number.
e.g. Volume/No.: ANSI/R15.02-1-1990 

If you do not know the number of the standard, you can look it up in an index.

WHAT IS ANSI?

The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) oversees the creation, promulgation and use of American Standards.

ANSI has had several name changes since its formation:

  • American Engineering Standards Committee (AESC), 1916 to 1928

  • American Standards Association (ASA), 1928 to 1966

  • United States of America Standards Institute (USASI), 1966 to 1969

  • American National Standards Institute (ANSI), 1969 to date
